NEXT WALKS! |
|
The Walks Programme has been suspended for the time being for various reasons and any new programme will be announced both here and in the SSBR Newsletter.
|
Contact Hugh or John to check on latest info. Please bring waterproof clothing, food, drink and good boots. You should be fit for the type of walk. Tell people where you are going and ideally bring a mobile phone. For safety reasons, lone barge hulk visiting is discouraged. The Society accepts no liability but every effort is made to make walks as safe as possible.

Before
exploring the foreshore please note!
Most of the seawall around our part of the coast is a public right of way but
many of the barge berths are on private land. It remains the
responsibility of any visitor to obtain permission for access from the landowner
if they wish to explore.
The foreshore and intertidal areas also support a rare and specialised flora on
the saltmarsh and vegetated shingle beaches and virtually all of the North Kent
Coast, the Deben, Orwell and Stour estuaries are designated Site of Special
Scientific Interest. The coast is particularly important for overwintering
birds and human activity on the foreshore would disturb them.
The Nature Conservancy Council for England therefore recommend: avoid trampling
on vegetated shingle/saltmarsh; avoid mudflats between October and March;
avoid concentrations of roosting birds: In summer do not visit islands in
the channels and watch out for breeding birds on shingle beaches.
